(Defense News, By Mike Yeo) The State Department cleared a massive arms deal for Taiwan on Thursday, worth up to $1.3 billion, though the package and dollar amount still need to be negotiated by Congress. The package includes a variety of missiles and missile components, torpedos, and electronic warfare equipment, hinting to the providing of largely defensive capabilities. Ahead of the announcement, a US government official said the weapons offer does not reflect any change in the long-standing “One China” policy.
